Mussel Ridge 46 - Disruptor
In July 2023, Newport Yacht Builders launched Disruptor, a Downeast-style Mussel Ridge 46 designed for offshore tuna fishing. The boat was built using NYB’s cutting-edge digital scanning, CNC machining, and precision construction techniques, allowing all systems to be designed and laid out in advance. Many components were designed and built before the bare hull and deck were delivered from Hutchinson Composites, allowing a handover to the owner 18 months after the contract was signed and 11 months after the hull arrived in Newport.
Powering Disruptor is a 1,000-horsepower Scania DI16-007M diesel engine, coupled with a Twin Disc MGX5136A 2.00:1 transmission and a Veem Star 36-inch five-bladed propeller. This setup allows the boat to reach a top speed of 21.2 knots at 2,300 RPM and cruise comfortably at 14.5 knots while burning 23 gallons per hour. With 850 gallons of fuel capacity, Disruptor has the range necessary for extended trips offshore. The boat's three helm stations—including a unique drop-down compartment in the transom—provide excellent control while fighting giant bluefin.
The expansive cockpit, which runs nearly a third of the boat's overall length, features an oversized livewell, a transom ramp for hauling in massive tuna, and a full array of professional-grade fishing gear, including swiveling rod holders, outriggers, a green stick, and a hydraulic bandit reel for trolling.
The boat’s drift stability, smooth tracking in following seas, and ability to handle rough waters make it a standout among other Downeast-style fishing boats.
Disruptor’s interior offers a practical yet comfortable layout designed with simplicity and easy maintenance in mind, and is well-suited for extended trips. Below are bunk beds, a forward owner’s cabin, and a fully enclosed head with a shower—all built using lightweight foam-core composite panels to keep weight down without sacrificing durability.
The galley is equipped with a twin-burner stove, convection microwave, refrigerator/freezer drawers, and ample storage.
The helm station features a Stidd captain’s chair, Furuno electronics, and advanced TimeZero fishing software.
The electrical and mechanical systems, developed in collaboration with Ethos Marine Systems and Buzzards Bay Boatworks, were also pre-designed and carefully laid out in advance.
