M/Y Contraband

The 93' motor yacht Contraband was launched by New England Boatworks (NEB) in the fall of 2018. Her owners, a very experienced cruising couple, envisioned her as a rugged, comfortable offshore cruiser that they could run themselves, without a paid crew. Her systems were designed for redundancy and simplicity, and her hull was finished with exposed welds and no fairing, workboat style, so, as the owner requested, so he could touch up the inevitable scrapes with a roller from the dinghy.

Ezra Smith, of Newport Yacht Builders (NYB) was brought into the project to help the owners create an interior layout and detailing that would parallel their vision for the rest of the boat—comfortable, inviting spaces with a laid-back feel that would wear well through many seas miles and grandchild visits. Durable and beautiful, the reclaimed long- leaf yellow pine trim offsets hand-brushed cabinetry and bulkheads for an overall impression of quality without fussiness.

NYB worked closely with the NEB design and build team to integrate the interior component build process with the structural and systems work being completed concurrently. Utilizing our scanning technology, we were able to deliver complete cabinetry modules that were built offsite, reducing trade overlap onboard, thereby increasing build efficiency.

Since delivery, Contraband has been serving her owners well, cruising the East Coast and Caribbean.

An example of the NYB process is shown in the development of the bridge. After working out the basic layout with 2d drawings, Smith created a 3d model of the space. With this, he was able to design the layout details within the envelope of the bridge structure, while also developing finishes and joinery details with the owners. Once the bridge structure was completed by NEB, the space was laser scanned for VIF (“verification in field”) and the 3d model was integrated into the scan, allowing NYB’s J. Thompson Marine Carpentry to build out the furniture components offsite to precise dimensions with no on-site templating, and install them complete once the other trades had completed work in the space.
